The film is based on the true story of Laurel Hester (Moore), a police officer in Ocean County, New Jersey. The story narrates the difficulties faced by a lesbian police detective and her domestic partner, Stacie Andree (Page). Following her diagnosis with terminal lung cancer in 2005, Hester repeatedly appealed to the county’s board of chosen Freeholders in an attempt to ensure her pension benefits could be passed on to her domestic partner
While this movie may not appeal to everyone, it certainly delivers a lot of life to issues surrounding equal rights. Coupled with a terminal cancer it brings the tears forward and reminds you that life is short and unexpected, and to really think about how you are contributing to the world to make it a better place. As this was based on a true story, it was inspirational to know there are people out there going through hardships that most of us aren’t even aware of and through the struggle of it all keep pushing to fight for justice and the right to be treated equally
Its high profile list of actors certainly saw the real value and need for Laurel Hester’s story to be told, and delivered exceptionally good performances
